Francine Pickering taking her Smart Women's network solely social ends up ...in conversation ep07

In January I received an email newsletter notice from Francine's Smart Women Network

Welcome to the new, streamlined, Smart Women

Smart Women has been away for a while, taking a break. Now we're back with a regular flow of news and events to help your business. The old web site has gone now so you can keep in touch with us in any of three ways:

      *  The Smart Women blog
      *  Smart Women on Facebook
      *  Smart Women on Twitter

And, of course, the best news will be scooped up in these newsletters.
We hope you'll appreciate the new approach but if Smart Women is no longer for you, feel free to unsubscribe from these emails. We'll be sorry to see you go but understand the world moves on.

I've been in a dialogue with Francine for a couple of years now about the shifting sands of social media and this step towards a solely social presence on the web moving away from traditional web presence interests me.

Last year I'd read and bookmarked an article on BNET titled "Is It Time to Shut Down Your Network?" It reflects on how the U.S. State Department announced that it was shutting down www.America.gov, the website launched to provide cultural and policy content to the world. Turning instead to an entirely social media oriented footprint. I was amazed at the how brands can benefit from social spaces. If you are going to spend time encouraging community its seems a good starting point to be where you know you have a receptive audience.

Graphic-fb-vs-web-traffic

With this in mind I invited Clarity-in-Communication's Francine Pickering to tell me about why she was exploring this route.

SHOW NOTES

  • Introductions and providing groundwork
  • Bit about Francines background
  • Smart Women Network
  • The offline networking event for women in business developed to include a website and online directory, now SmartWomen network is solely social - Facebook, Twitter and Blog
  • Where is your market? Be where your customers are.
  • Sandwich Board marketing mentality.
  • Encorperating the social web component as an offering to your marketing business.
  • Confidence to 'Go Social'

Joachim Shotter visits Fibre Camp and ends up ...in conversation ep6!

I first met Joachim whilst visiting a tech friend in a shared office complex in Nottingham's Lace Market a year or so ago and at the time we talked social networks as I was developing Ning networks for Arts Council England. At the time we talked about his music industry roots and lamented how the arts can't support a sensible standard of living. Creativity drives artists in to the 'creative industries' for economic reasons but artists with soul and conscience behind their art be it music, performance, mixed, digital or traditional media find thier hearts leading them back to their core practice.

Show Notes

  • Introducing Jo, Music Lover, Producer, Maker, Manager and Teacher...and web creative.
  • Economics vs Creativity
  • A journey through the music industry and Jo's discovery of technology
  • Reflections on our secondary education in the late 80's and yound people today
  • The teaching of technology in schools referencing @tombarrett and @suebecks
  • The speed of technology
  • As a Creative you can't be creative every day, thinking space for artists
  • Passing on knowledge, raising the bar and positive competition

Giles Croft talks with CJ ...in conversation ep4

Nottingham European Arts Theatre festival 26th - 12th June (interview 6th June)

SHOW NOTES: This and more is covered in this chat. Thank you Giles for coming to Lace Market House, great talking to you.

Giles Croft - Nottingham Playhouse's Artistic Director stepped aside from NEAT11 for an hour and visited Lace Market House to talk to me about the festival running right now across the city of Nottingham showcasing local and UK based performance art companies and that of Europe. A selection of the greatest performing talent from across Europe is gathered in our city. We forget some times that we are European.

Here are some notes from our conversation. Did you go to #NEAT11? Tag and Tweet your experience to @GilesCroft

#neat11 is the festival's Twitter hashtag. All the event taking place can be found on thier website www.neatfestival.co.uk

The diversity of genre is breathtaking including Plays, Music, Comedy, Film, Dance, Poetry, Readings, Opera, Visual Arts, and Childrens' Theatre. The venue list is no less impressive in its own way seeing performances in Nottingham Playhouse, Lakeside Art Centre, Royal Centre, Nottingham Contemporary, Forest football ground, Galleries of Justice, Castle and many others.

NEAT11 is streamed in to 6 channels listed across the top navigation of the website.

Nottingham Playhouse hosting the European Theatre Convention

Nottingham Playhouse has been a member for 10 years. 8 years ago the Playhouse wanted to host this festival only now has the partnership and collaboration across the city become possble. What is happening in Nottingham now? What has changes to bring partners on board to NEAT11?

Connection with Business in the City?

Closing....

This festival is huge. How does someone not entrenched in the arts decide what to see?

Giles gave 3 suggestions to my question if you saw one show at NEAT11 what would he recommend. In a act of sublime deplomacy he put forward 3 worth candidates.

Faust - The owner of an old, forgotten studio stages the history of Faust before the very eyes of the audience. He shows Faust’s covenant with the Devil, his tragic love of Margaret, his anguished search for truth, his illuminations, and his death.

Poland 3 Iran 2Poland 3 Iran 2 is part of neat11 and takes place at the Nottingham Forest City Ground. 1976, the best ever Polish football team played the best ever Iranian football team. Such a clash of talent led to a memorable game with Poland edging to a 3-2 win.

Three SistersArguably the greatest play of the Twentieth Century, Three Sisters tells the tale of Olga, Irina and Masha whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of glamorous officer Veshinin in their remote town. Their eternal struggle to live and to love is charted with Chekov’s sharp eye and unfailing humanity.

Talking Crowdsorcing with Crowdworks' Nick Wright

In conversation episode 2

I met Nick at NottTuesday back in January where we briefly talked about his crowdsourcing venture Crowdworks.net. As a concept crowdsourcing was begining to ping far out on the edges of my sonar moving in at quite a pace. But didn't really grasp it fully. On March 23 I travelled to London for the first 2011 BAFA roadshow. Crowdsourcing featured heavily in the second half of the day and it became clear that despite the obvious potential of crowdsourcing the concept was competely alien to the audience and a foundation knowledge needed to be intiated, a frame of reference in order to process the mechanic of using the "crowd" to resource or fund a project.

On returning to Nottingham I was determined to understand where crowdsourcing fitted in to my 7 Roads of Social Media.

Nick Wright and his Crowdworks enterprise was crowdsourcing. Here in Nottingham so local; nice, and I was looking for a guest for my 'in conversation' fibreca.mp show. A quick tweet and I'd set up coffee, chat and an cj.fibre.mp episode plus I was on my way to making sence of crowdsourcing.

Crowdsourcing I have discovered comes in many flavours! It depends on the resource being sourced.

It can be giving to charity, raising money for projects, bringing together collaborators or freelancers, collective problem solving or knowledge collation. Crowdwords is an ideas networking platform to crowdsource innovative thinking and ideas from across an organisation. Companies have there own platform to protect the interlectual property of the network.

Caron & Lucy talk tech - Tribal Loyalty

Catching up with friends to talk tech is a boon for me and being able to share those conversations with a wider network is why FibreCa.mp is a concept to be embraced. It's been a year since the studio was fired up in a small box room in Lace Market House and now it's headed down in to the basement. It's a Bat Cave of media making with its own super hero! Tirelessly making media and networking to kick start the studio in to thriving business. I think t's called Boot Straping. At PCM we are bit more like Shoe Lacing! Enjoy this weeks show. Thanks to KuKuAps's @LucyHG for joining me again in the studio.

CJ's PCM projects "while the cat's away" catchup

While @philcampbell is away in SXSW (South by SouthWest), the uber geek tech festival held annually in Austin Texas, I was going to do the weekly catch up show alone. The studio is a sad place devoid of 'the Campbell' so I invited friend and fellow lover of tech Lucy Herreras-Griffiths, Lucy HG and conveniently enough @lucyHG on twitter who agreed to join me to talk about the last 7 days of tech adventure and meet ups. How could we not mention the iPad2!

The general theme is Tech and shiny apps! Lucy has agreed to join me again so this is the first of many.

Lucy's app recommendation was a cracker if you are wanting to use your tech to stay organised. Pocket Informant. A high functioning calendar and combined todo scheduler which can be syncronised across all your desktop and mobile devises as well as Google Calendar and MS Outlook applications. It isn't a free app but worth every penny from what Lucy says.

When I get my iPad this will be it's first app.
